Thursday, February 25th, 2011 the Gators entered their third game of the season with a record of 1-1 facing one of best teams in the tournament the Harlem Renaissance Monarchs. Without their starting power forward Darius Rhodes (out with an ankle injury) the Gators had to find a way to dominate in the paint with forward/center Isiah Frection. Because of the fast pace, the Monarchs defense, and the Gators sloppiness there were many turnovers throughout the game.
The highest lead was a mere 5 points which showed how close these teams were. With a score of 46-45 with 2 minutes and 40 seconds in the 4th quarter this game went down to the wire. The Monarchs scored four straight points leaving the Gators down by 5 with not much time left. Two critical free throws were made by the Monarchs which sealed their win. Despite the loss to the Harlem Renaissance Monarchs (51-49) center Akeem Armstrong finished the day with a double double scoring 11 points and grabbing down 10 rebounds. The sense of urgency is felt as the Gators fall to a record of 1-2 with a few more games left in the regular season.

GATORS WIN BIG !
"We have to work on full court defense and rebounds but I am happy with the game" says Head Coach Darren when asked about his feelings involving the game. Also, Darren believes that the players were not as sharp as hoped but, he thought it was just first game jitters. With the record 1-0 the Gators should go into next weeks game Thursday, February 17th at the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club a little more confident.

Boys Varsity Basketball Team Tryouts- The Green School
The Green School students trying out for the Gaynor Campus Gators
Sneakers squeaked against the hard wood floors of the Gaynor Campus 3rd floor gym Friday, November 5th where tryouts for the Boys Varsity Basketball Team were held. This season the decision was made to have a campus wide team for the first time. For the past two years The Green School and Lyons were separate teams which competed in the North Brooklyn Tournament. The Gaynor Campus Gators will play against schools such as Midwood and neighboring Grand Street Campus in hopes of soon being in the PSAL (Public School Athletic League).
Coaching the Gators will be Darron and Mr.Janson who both coached boys basketball teams for the past two years. When asked what they were looking for Darron responded saying "high basketball IQ's" and a "team player". He continued by saying that their goals are to win games and to teach the value of playing on a team. Like most high school coaches, Darron also hopes that this basketball team will help students who are not doing too well academically.
"Without teamwork we can't get anything accomplished" says Isiah Frection, 11th grade student at The Green School. He also added that if he makes the team he would like to see strong efforts and hard work throughout the season.
In the closing statements Head Coach Darron and Assistant Coach Mr.Janson thanked all the students for trying out for the team, and also encouraged them to continue to work hard if they didn't make the cut. Sweat dripping down their faces and gasping for breath the boys listened closely as Mr.Janson reminded them that out of the 27 Green School students that tried out only 6 would be picked. At the end of next week these anxious students will see who made the roster for the 2010-2011 Gaynor Campus Gators.
